VIM is more than just a magazine.
VIM is more than just a magazine. With four divisions – Administration, Business, Creative & Editorial – there is a place for everyone at VIM.
All VIM teams hold open applications in the Fall, following our first general meeting. Teams with open positions for the Spring semester will accept applications in January. If you’re interested in applying, please note that each position has a different application process and you may be called for an interview with your prospective director.

Administration

Editor-in-Chief
The Editor-in-Chief’s are responsible for leading the publication, as well as its 40+ directors and 200+ members. The Editor-in-Chiefs work hands-on in all aspects of what it takes to run and create a magazine — both in print and online. From signing-off on all pitches and pages, to being the voice and head of VIM, the (2) editors-in-chief of VIM work together and collaborate with everyone part of the process to produce (1) print issues each semester and (2) digital issues each semester.
Assistant Editor-in-Chief
The Assistant Editor-in-Chief is responsible for working towards a hopeful following-year position as one of the new Editors-in-Chief. Their position’s duties, besides being a liaison between the editors and directors and all VIM members, is to assist the editors in any way needed (as well as give creative input in all projects and endeavors.)
Qualifications:
Time commitment (VIM is like a full-time job — make sure you can commit to General and Directors’
Meetings every-other Monday, last-minute photoshoot reschedules and being available by phone [a lot].)
Familiarity with and passion for magazine content, publishing, writing, photography, creative production & more.
Ability to be counted on, as well as hold a leadership position
Knowledge of the media, entertainment, lifestyle and/or fashion sphere(s)
Responsibilities:
Attend all team and general meetings
Aside from everything already listed, being dependable, reliable, trustworthy and willing to (often) put VIM first

The Board of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) is responsible for ensuring that VIM is an accurate reflection of the diverse lives and perspectives of the Michigan State University community. Creative

The Creative team for VIM is responsible for coordinating all of the content and creating a cohesive magazine. Team members will have the opportunity to create and pitch ideas for cover and other creative shoots as well as help select pitches from all other content teams. Teams will also be responsible for approving styling within each shoot to ensure cohesiveness of the magazine. Finally, team members will submit creative blog ideas to the website each semester.
Qualifications
Familiarity with selecting pieces to create one cohesive look
Ability to think creatively and bring unique ideas to life
Familiarity with writing and styling is recommended
Creative experience is recommended but not required

The Health & Beauty team for VIM is responsible for providing readers with an in-depth understanding of current trends and routines for the inner and outer self.

The Creative Beauty team for VIM is responsible for all of the makeup done on the sets of content shoots for the magazine. Some of the makeup will be natural, while others will be artistic and creative.

The Fashion Relations team is responsible for the preparation, production and execution of VIM’s in-person fashion events. The team also acts as the main source of communication between VIM and the Apparel and Textile Design (ATD) program. We showcase the designs of ATD students at several events throughout the year, with the end of the year fashion show being our main focus. Our team has both a creative and business side. The business side of our team focuses on finding sponsors for the spring show, communicating with representatives from potential event venues and meeting the needs of VIP guests of the show. The creative side of our team handles creative direction for events including selecting venues, planning and creating decor, and communicating with designers and models.

Responsible for helping the team with preparation for the annual fashion show including securing a venue, creative brainstorming, meeting with potential designers and models, set up and tear down, and day-of-show help.
Participate in devising, constructing, and executing fall or spring events to showcase selected MSU designer’s work
Responsible for communication between the Apparel and Textile Design program and VIM
Business team

The Lifestyle team for VIM is responsible for writing creative print & digital articles centered around topics pertaining to life; travel, career, relationships, politics, & entertainment. Members will have the opportunity to benefit from team bonding outings, collaborate openly with directors & team members, & share lifestyle content with VIM’s readers, followers, and members.

The Fashion team is responsible for pitching, drafting, and puzzling together all things style in the Fashion sector of VIM. Our team is broken into three segments: Bloggers, Editorial Writers, and Stylists. Responsibilities are consistent for each segment. Members have the opportunity to creatively pitch ideas, compose pieces for the blog (with original photos), author pieces for the digital issue and bi-annual print issues of VIM, attend photoshoots, style outfits and gain relevant experience. Members will also have the opportunity to network with peers that share parallel interest in fashion and have tangible pieces for professional development.

The UX Team for VIM is responsible for ensuring an excellent user experience on VIM’s website. Team members have the opportunity to strengthen user experience design skills, web design skills, and work as a team to collaborate and learn from one another.
Qualifications
Relevant background preferred: User experience design and research, web design and development, graphic design, and frontend coding (HTML, CSS, etc)
Creativity, dependability, good time-management & communication skills
Interest in enhancing the user experience of the website and making meaningful contributions, while always keeping usability, accessibility, inclusivity, and aesthetic in mind

Business

The Advertising team for VIM is responsible for outreach to various businesses, both locally and nationally, throughout the year in pursuit of selling advertising space in print & digital issues of magazines, as well as social media postings. Members will have the opportunity to gain valuable sales, client relations and account management experience. As the Advertising team is responsible for generating a large portion of VIM’s revenue, it is very important that members exemplify the utmost dedication to their role on the team.
Qualifications
At least one semester as an active general member or member of another team within VIM
Familiarity with drafting/writing pitches & sales
Determined personality (“Go-Getter” mindset), not easily discouraged, extremely responsive and demonstrates professionalism and excellent communication skills
Must have 3-4 hours per week to be allocated to VIM related materials

The events team at VIM Magazine is responsible for organizing and planning the launch parties during the fall and spring semesters, as well as organizing the networking trip during the spring. Additional responsibilities include organizing fundraisers, hayrides, and other group activities for the club. The events team may also help and assist other teams for certain events.

The Marketing team for VIM is responsible for publicizing magazine content and spreading awareness to the general public. Members will gain valuable experience in communication through educating and working with previous, current and future VIM members, as well as those who work in the fashion industry.

Major / Minor in a business or fashion-related field (Marketing, Advertising, Public Relations, Entrepreneurship, etc.)
Ability to dedicate 1-3 hours per week to VIM

The Art team for VIM is responsible for designing the print magazine each semester. Team members will have the opportunity to create a style guide for each issue of the magazine including fonts, graphic elements, and layouts for every issue that creates a cohesive magazine. Art also encompasses digital art which creates and develops the digital issues that are put on our website each semester.

Must have intermediate-advanced experience with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator
Strong artistic vision and passion for art and graphic design

The Student Relations team for VIM is responsible for being a liaison between prospective VIM members and the publication itself. They are a source for any student who has questions about VIM and are also responsible for finding ways to connect with these students. Student Relations is also responsible for scouting, recruiting, and selecting all models for VIM’s print & digital issues. Student Relations team plans & hosts two Casting Calls per academic year to recruit talent from Michigan State University, and oversees model diversity & inclusion in each issue of the magazine. Members will have the opportunity to work alongside content directors and stylists to select models for each photoshoot.

The Copy Editing team for VIM is responsible for performing edits on all written content within the print & digital articles to develop, enhance, and correct writing. Members will have the opportunity to learn about the magazine editorial process and the basics of magazine editing.

The Film team for VIM is responsible for film related content that reaches all of VIM’s social platforms. Examples include mini documentaries that are shot for our digital magazines and promotional content that is released to advertise events and upcoming issue releases.
Qualifications
Ideal members are primarily Media & Info or Film Studies majors, but it is open to all majors.
Candidates show a great deal of interest and passion in video content creation ranging from casual video content such as tutorials and behind the scenes montages to scripted productions such as documentaries/interviews and short films.
Ideal candidates are extremely driven and motivated to building their individual portfolios through the opportunities provided through VIM
It’s not necessary to have your own equipment but it’s always beneficial.
Responsibilities:
Members are required to attend all biweekly team meetings as well as general team meetings and abide by the rules set in the Film Team Handbook (listed below)
Members will be responsible for scripting, collaborating, filming, and editing all video content that is produced through VIM.
Rules
You can not post official footage or photos of the shoots until the article is published. Doing so you risk being assigned future projects.
If you cannot make it to a shoot after being scheduled, you must let the director know at least 72 hours in advanced. If you fail to do so, you do risk being on probation for the semester. If you miss one shoot, you will be put on probation for the rest of the semester.
If you expect yourself to miss a deadline to turn in your work (edit draft, final film graphics, ect.) you must let the director know at least 1 week in advanced. Failure to do so you risk being given any projects for the rest of the semester.
If you have two or more unexcused meetings in a semester, you risk your membership and the possibility of any projects being assigned to you.
The director reserves the right to change any of these rules to fit the needs of the team, if seen necessary.

The Graphic Design team for VIM is responsible for creating unique and creative content for all social media platforms, special projects, and assisting with digital and print graphics.

The Photography team for VIM is responsible for scheduling shoots with the other teams, taking photos for specific events, but more importantly, taking photos that will either be physically in the Print magazines or the online magazine issues every semester. Team members will also have a chance to improve their portfolios, see what it’s like to take photos for a fashion shoot, as well as meet other photographers.
Qualifications
Know how to shoot in manual + RAW photos
Familiar with using Lightroom or Photoshop (or both)
Able to communicate well with other team members and other directors on AND off shoots
Able to follow deadlines with amazing time-management
