Making Women’s Bodies a Trend is Out of Style

For centuries, women’s bodies have gone in and out of style. From thigh gaps to Brazilian Butt Lifts, females are constantly pressured to keep up with the latest body trend. With the resurgence of Y2K fashion over the past few years, low rise jeans and miniskirts are back in style. Unfortunately, when new clothing trends emerge, so do trends concerning women’s bodies.

Across runways and social media, hip bones, and thigh gaps have unfortunately become the latest trend. Celebrities and influencers, such as the Kardashians, have started to reverse plastic surgery that once accentuated their curves.

The world was shocked by Kim Kardashian’s dramatic 2022 Met Gala look, where she wore Marlyn Monroe’s iconic dress she wore while singing happy birthday to John F. Kennedy in 1962. To fit into Marlyn’s delicate dress, Kim rapidly lost weight in a matter of weeks.

Many people have speculated that Kim, among other celebrities, have started using the drug Ozempic to lose weight quickly. Ozempic, a drug created to help adults with type 2 diabetes manage their blood sugar, is known for causing modest weight loss and has become viral on social media.

While the everyday person may not be able to access or afford weight loss drugs and plastic surgery, celebrities and influencers often have the resources to alter their bodies when fashion trends change. Because this lifestyle is unattainable for the average person, it is damaging to women when unrealistic body standards are normalized by celebrities.

One day, a woman’s body will be considered attractive and the next day, it is out of style. Women shouldn’t feel like their bodies belong in a certain decade revolving around a specific trend to feel beautiful. Luckily, society continues to progress in accepting individuals’ unique body types. Instead of promoting plastic surgery and weight loss drugs, promote confidence and celebrate women’s uniqueness.
