The Perfect Match
Although we have all heard the cliche color rules in fashion like, “Don’t wear more than 3 colors or tones”, and “Don’t wear white after Labor Day”, many believe there are no rules when it comes to color when styling an outfit; but always the fear of if the outfit matches, looks too busy, or clashes with your skin tone. Knowing how to color match your wardrobe with your skin tone eliminates the fear of washouts and chaos, and makes choosing your OOTD that much easier.
Color analysis is a process I highly recommend to anyone with the fear or struggles of finding their perfect color. Color analysis is the technique of color matching shades to your skin complexion, eye color and hair color.
Finding your colors might be easier than you may think. The first thing to do is find your skin’s underlying pigments. Think about how you choose your foundation shade, it is all about the undertones. There are two easy ways to find your undertones at home.
The Vein Test: Check the veins on your wrist, they will help indicate your pigment’s undertone.
The Metal Test: put a gold piece of jewelry on one wrist, and a piece of silver jewelry on the other, and determine which one looks best with your skin tone
Those with cool undertones should wear mainly cool tones–blues, greens, teals, and purples.
Those with warm undertones should wear mainly warm tones– oranges, pinks, and yellows.
Those with neutral tones find themselves in the middle, and can swing either tones— red can usually become a neutral color.
Now that you know how to easily find the perfect shades for you, remember color theory when styling! Start with one of your colors, find its complementary color, and use those as your starting points. Using complementary colors as your main or statement pieces, especially ones that compliment your complexion, will draw eyes to your outfit without it feeling overpowering, and will enhance your natural beauty magnificently!
